FLAG POST: Maria Britton

Tether Projects is pleased to announce the first in the series FLAG POST, a public art exhibitions at SPECTRE Arts in Durham, NC.
With a nod to the Chicago and NYC based project Temporary Allegiance, by Philip Von Zweck, FLAG POST will be a rotating show of artist-made flags. Inspired by the broad use and display of flags from decorative to political and from personal to institutional, FLAG POST flags will fly for their own purposes.
Chapel Hill, NC and NYC-based artist, Maria Britton’s flag will be on exhibit November 18th, 2016. Maria Britton’s paintings on old patterned bed sheets explore themes of comfort and horror, memory and forgetting, and transformation and habit. Recent exhibitions include SOIL Gallery, Seattle, WA; (harbor), New York, NY; BAM, Brooklyn, NY; The Stephen & George Laundry Line, Queens, NY; The Scrap Exchange, Durham, NC; and Im Ersten, Vienna, Austria. She has participated in artist residencies through the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Petrified Forest National Park, and Vermont Studio Center. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings (#82). Maria earned her BFA from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC and her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Tether Projects is a curatorial collaboration between Rusty Shackleford and Julie Rudder. Rusty and Julie reside outside Chapel Hill, NC.
